This Houston Shop needs cleaned out.... What's the best way?
I have this friend named John.. John made a deal with his wife that when he turned 80 he would liquidate his machine shop of many, many years... Well a lot of the big machines are gone and now he is left with a mess.. I decided to help him finish the job and clear out the shop.. There are all kinds of useful stuff for people that like to make things and I am trying to figure out the best way to accomplish this... So far I think the best way is to have a few days of open shop and have people in the Houston area bring cash and make deals on the stuff... What do you think?

Good Paint has made the base look better after it was restored than this tool looked out of the factory!

    I have probably read every post Mr. Oder wrote or replied to on Practical Machinist. All of your comments about him are true. He is a treasure. I will say the usual refrain, "wish I was closer." Once you get a handle on things one suggestion would be to put anything associated with precision or machine parts such as that box of change gears on to the PM classified section.

    If you remove material from the ways to get them flat, you need to add material to the tailstock to bring it back to center

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins День тому

      Yes that is true,,, and there are several ways to accomplish that. I have the materials to do that in two different ways here in the shop... You also have to raise the saddle back to the right height.. That will be accomplished by grinding the saddle deeper to allow for the materials to be added... I will eight plane the saddle or I am hoping I can use the B&S 10 x30x 14 grinder...

    • @GoodPimpofTheNorth
      @GoodPimpofTheNorth 7 годин тому

      @@10swatkins why do you have to bring the saddle back up? You can correct tool center height with the tool post.

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins 6 годин тому

      The saddle support the apron... The apron has the drive screws going through it and they move the apron and saddle up and down the bed. If I lower the saddle by grinding the ways and saddle the apron is lowered too and throws off the geometry causing the screws to bind as they get close to either end of travel.

    I'd make a fixture. A center boss to locate the blotter blank, a punch position, and a locating pin some odd number of holes away from the punch. I haven't worked out the math, but I think it doesn't matter what number of holes away, as long as it is an odd number for an even spacing like 40. I'd start with 19. Punch, rotate, punch, repeat. Of course if you have a spin indexer it's the same process.

    It took me far too long to pick up on and realize what the "super heavy swim team" shirt was getting at :-P

      After all the effort you're putting into this machine, you better make your own super heavy on this bridgeport to make this restoration worthwhile - haha

      I ordered it about three minutes after star ship landed on a crippled mostly gone forward flap:) I was watching it on my pad with earbuds on... Sitting in my favorite breakfast place eating my morning omelet, I told the staff not to worry about anything I was doing . I was jumping around in my booth like a wild man through out the flight :)

      @@10swatkins I saw the video of the flap disintegrating on re-entry. It's amazing that somehow it hung on - I thought for sure that flap was a goner as soon as hot plasma was coming out the topside of it! They clearly have a long way to go and a bunch of issues to work out still
